Carnivorous Plants and "The Man Eating Tree"

Published in 1939, one of a series of titles produced by the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago.

Paperback, 20 pages. A crease at the bottom-right corner which extends to the second page. The front cover appears to have had a sticker attached and removed at some point. Otherwise in very good condition for its age.

Discusses the known genera and is illustrated with line drawings and photographs. Most interesting though are extensive details of the various legends concerning "man-eating" plants including 'The Death Flower', 'The Flesh Eating Vine', 'The Snake Tree', 'The Man Eating Tree' and 'The Fly-Catcher Plant of the Desert'.

Rarely seen, this is only the third copy I have come across in the last ten years.

Growing Carnivores - An Italian perspective

Growing Carnivores
An Italian Perspective

Marcel Catalano

First English Edition

18 x 25cm Hardback, 135 all-colour pages printed on glazed paper, 150 photographs.

Author Signed Copy!

Written by Marcello Catalano, with his twenty-five years of experience, the text is divided into 6 chapters: 'Materials and needs', 'Where to grow them', 'Species on sale in Italy', 'How to propagate them', 'Pests and diseases' and 'Genera not on sale in Italy'. Then a few pages about the AIPC Conservation Project and about the (presumed) legend of the Madagascar Man-eating Tree.

The treated genera are Dionaea, Darlingtonia, Nepenthes, Heliamphora, Utricularia, Cephalotus, Pinguicula, Drosera, Sarracenia, Byblis, Drosophyllum, Roridula, Ibicella, Triphyophyllum, Catopsis, Brocchinia, Genlisea and Aldrovanda. The first nine genera are described in detail in the pages about the species on sale in Italy. The other nine are treated more concisely because they can't be easily found on the Italian market.

A unique perspective on growing carnivorous plants that is a must have title for collectors of the literature!
